Abstract

With the recent advances of digital transformation, the development of logistics automation has been accelerated to further improve operational effectiveness and efficiency. In particular, the Automatic Storage & Retrieval System (AS/RS) has been widely explored to revamp inbound and outbound operations in logistics facilities. By doing so, space utilization can be further optimised, but not all warehouses are suitable and, as the initial investment is substantial, the long-term benefits must be comprehensively evaluated. This paper proposes an intelligent system that combines an evolutionary algorithm and mixed reality to optimize and visualize warehouse layout design. With the use of AS/RS, the system aims to improve the operational efficiency and space utilization of logistics facilities. The evolutionary algorithm (EA) optimizes the layout by minimizing the total traveling distance between functional areas, while the mixed reality (MR) component visualizes the AS/RS through a Microsoft HoloLens. This approach provides an immersive experience of the optimal layout design and enables the implementation of smart facility layout design with warehouse automation technologies.
