Abstract

The in situ synthesis of a TiC/Ti composite layer on Ti-6Al-4V by laser cladding using Cr3C2and Ti powders as the starting materials was examined. Thermodynamic calculations show that the synthesis of a composite TiC/Ti from a mixture of Cr3C2and Ti is a spontaneous process. The proper choice of laser processing parameters resulted in the fine and even distribution of TiC particles in the Ti matrix.
