Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine the effect of filler volume fraction on apparent diffusivity of particle reinforced dental composites. A simple cubic and a cylindrical finite element cell models was applied. For estimating the effective moisture diffusion coefficient, a mathematical model is proposed. Comparing with the results deduced by Hashin's and Shen's analytical formulas, the proposed model gives reasonable predictions. Moreover, the simple cubic model provides more accurate predictions compared to the cylindrical one. A simple linear empirical formula is also proposed for predicting the effective moisture diffusion coefficient. It is found that the maximum error of the formula is within 5%.
