Abstract
Mesostructured composite coating was successfully synthesized in situ by laser surface alloying of copper (LSA) on SAE 1045 carbon steel. The microstructure in the alloyed zone consists of a randomly interconnected two-phase network: the phase is ã-Cu in the bright region and it is α-Fe in the dark region. This is believed to be due to the occurrence of the liquid spinodal decomposition (LSD) before crystallization in the alloyed zone caused by high cooling rate.
