Abstract

This chapter focuses on the designs, analyses, and experimental issues of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) tunable lasers for continuous wavelength tuning. In comparison to the discretely tunable lasers in the previous chapter, this type of laser is preferable for many applications, such as optical communications, biomedical studies, laboratory equipment, etc. The laser in this chapter will also serve as the key component for developing more complicated and more functional laser systems, to be discussed in Chapter 8.
