Abstract

My research area is investigating Mainland Chinese students’ cultural adaptation to Hong Kong with a particular focus on the role of intergroup communication between these students and Hong Kong locals. These sojourning students represent minority group members in Hong Kong and often face the need to (re)negotiate their social identities during encounters with Hong Kong locals. I will contribute to the discussion by offering insights on this topic, such as whether/how their perceived discriminative communicative behaviors from locals influence their willingness to engage in intergroup interactions with locals, their overall cultural adaptation to Hong Kong, and satisfaction with the sojourn.
