Abstract

Mechanochemical process has been applied to the mixture of Y2O3and Al2O3in order to increase its reactivity. Yttrium aluminate garnet (YAG, Y3Al5O12) has been synthesized at 1000 °C from the milled mixture, which is significantly lower than that required by the conventional solid-state reaction process and comparable with that required by most of the chemical-based synthesis routes. The reduced formation temperature of the YAG phase is believed to be beneficial from the refined Y2O3and Al2O3as a result of the high-energy ball milling.
