Abstract
Laser surface alloying technique was applied to fabricate a porous coating on NiTi shape memory alloy. The pores are uniformly distributed and are interconnected with each other in the coating. An average pore size of less than 10 micron was achieved. The porous coating is metallurgically bonded to the substrate NiTi alloy. The microstructure and corrosion properties of the coating will be discussed and compared with that of the laser gas nitrided layer. The possibility of applying the alloy with porous coating in medical use is discussed.
