Abstract

Current investigations of the impact behaviors of CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer/Plastic) mainly focus on the impact tests and analysis of CFRP laminates, considerably less work has been done for the transverse impact properties of CFRP rod and the cable system. The impact behaviors of CFRP cable under transverse impact loading were investigated by conducting a drop-weight testing program on 3 CFRP specimens, which composed of a 9.8mm Leadline CFRP rod and a RPC (Reactive Powder Concrete) grouted bond-type anchor. The typical failure patterns, impact force and energy versus time histories and the effect of repeated impacts were analysed. The results showed that the typical failure patterns of the specimens include slip in anchor, delamination in matrix and the breakage of the matrix and fiber. The capacity of the present CFRP cable system for absorbing and transforming energy is approximately 730J, the threshold impact energy for occurring of slip in the present RPC grouted bond-type anchor is about 309J. Repeated impacts resulted in a progressive degradation of the material's energy absorbing ability.
