The second clinical forum, titled “Speech, Language, and Hearing in Bilingual Children,” was published in 2005. The seven articles in the collection addressed grammar, lexicon, phonology, speech perception in noise, language-based processing measures, intelligibility of synthesized speech, and the design of intervention programs for DLL children. Not only was there a great increase in the amount of empirical data and the number of linguistic domains investigated, there was also increased diversity in the number of bilingual language pairs (e.g., Spanish–English, Vietnamese–English, various L1s–English; Kohnert & Goldstein, 2005). The third forum, titled “Development of English Literacy in Spanish-Speaking Children: Transforming Research Into Practice,” was published in 2007. The five articles in that collection showcased research studies on prereading and reading development in Spanish-speaking DLLs funded through the Development of English Literacy in Spanish-Speaking Children (DELSS) initiative by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the Office of Educational Research and Improvement (now the Institute of Education Science; Garcia, McCardle, & Nixon, 2007).
