Abstract

The use of innovative materials and structural systems has become an important dimension of the construction industry. This presentation reports the recent development and use of innovative construction materials for life-cycle maintenance (LCM) of concrete infrastructures particularly in the author’s research group. The innovative materials to be reported include high-performance fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites for strengthening of existing concrete structures, ultra-high performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composites for infrastructure durability and longevity, multi-functional coating for surface protection of concrete structures, and green geopolymer cement for reduced carbon footprint. An optimal use of these above materials is expected to lead to a cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach for the LCM of concrete infrastructures.
