Abstract
A novel low-cost wavelength meter based on inexpensive single-mode fiber-optic directional couplers has been constructed. The device exploits the fused fiber couplers' inherent wavelength dependence characteristics, that is, their coupling ratio changes as a function of the operation wavelength. Potential applications of the proposed wavelength meters in optical sensing and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks are enormous.
