Abstract
Since ChatGPT’s release in 2022, there has been much discussion in the English language teaching community about how best to implement GenAI in the classroom. As research on this topic is in its early stages, there are still many gaps in understanding. For example, there have been suggestions that GenAI can be used for personalised learning, but the way in which these kinds of experiences should be effectively facilitated is less clear. Also, there are significant risks that need to be taken into account. For instance, there are some concerns that GenAI may negatively impact higher-order thinking, creativity, social skills, and motivation to conduct research. Consequently, there is a need to develop teaching methods that take advantage of the affordances of the technology without negatively impacting learners’ development. Additionally, issues related to digital literacy exist. As responsible use of the technology is essential, there is a need to consider how to teach appropriate uses to students. Highlighting ways that GenAI can be effectively implemented will not only guide teachers but also reveal important topics for researchers to explore.
This presentation will discuss the findings of a systematic literature review that sought to reveal ways that GenAI can be used to improve teaching and learning. After a discussion of the main themes that emerged, a five-step process for implementing GenAI will be presented. Practical applications for English language teaching will also be discussed, along with some of the approaches that have been used at the English Language Centre of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
