Abstract

Active learning activities are suspended during the pandemic. Most of the activities in the online lessons are only voice-over slides or videos which focus on passive learning. Students’ learning motivation and social interaction are being affected, especially for the SEN (Special Educational Needs) students. Several recent surveys of students suggest their mental well-being has been devastated by the pandemic’s social and economic consequences. To improve the current situation and inspiration from the metaverse, we propose a platform for virtual reality tours that combines spatial information and academic knowledge. Pilot development has been tested in six primary schools and has served more than 700 students in Hong Kong in 2020. We have received positive feedback from the students, teachers, and parents. This paper will illustrate the design principles and the flow of development.
