Abstract
The global shift towards green energy and zero-emission transportation is a key priority, driven by international climate agreements and national sustainability goals. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (HFCVs) offer a promising solution for sustainable transport, with zero emissions, efficient energy use, and performance comparable to traditional internal combustion vehicles. This paper reviews the development, adoption, and challenges of HFCVs, focusing on policy frameworks, technological advancements, and consumer attitudes in key hydrogen-promoting regions such as China, Japan, South Korea, the United States, and the European Union. This study uses a systematic literature review approach to examine factors influencing consumer adoption, vehicle characteristics, and infrastructure requirements. It also explores strategic recommendations for promoting HFCVs in Hong Kong, aligning with the region’s carbon neutrality goals for 2050. The findings emphasise the need for integrated policy support, infrastructure development, and public awareness to commercialise hydrogen fuel cell technologies successfully.
