title = "How to avoid common mistakes in experimental research?",
abstract = "Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to discuss some common pitfalls in experimental research in the field of hospitality and tourism. It aims to offer recommendations on how to avoid such problems to enhance theory development. Findings: This paper highlights some common pitfalls in hospitality research regarding manipulations, samples and data analyses. The challenges imposed by the global pandemic are also discussed. Research limitations/implications: Researchers in hospitality are recommended to refine their experimental designs, to recruit appropriate and sufficient samples and to avoid the abuse of “researcher degrees of freedom” in data analysis. Originality/value: This is the first study to review common mistakes in experimental research in hospitality research and to recommend some remedies. The findings of this study can contribute to stronger theory development.",

note = "Funding Information: Finally, we offer some thoughts on how global crises pose challenges for experimentation. Currently, the COVID-19 pandemic has not only resulted in huge social, economic and environmental losses to the public but also hit the “reset button” for experimental research in our field (). COVID-19 reflects the “cancellation culture” as various travel, social and funding restrictions are imposed in response to the crisis (). Consequently, many lab experiments are either postponed or canceled. The large-scale closures (either temporary or permanent) of hospitality businesses heavily limit researchers{\textquoteright} access and ability to conduct field experiments. There are also serious implications for external funding. Government grant funding agencies are likely to focus on “essential” research rather than funding hospitality research. Moreover, funding from the industry is likely to dry out owing to economic hardships imposed by COVID-19. Future topics of inquiry will need to be modified to fit the post-crisis reality.
