Abstract

China began its housing reform in mid 1980s. The market-oriented housing reform aimed to improve people's living conditions by commercializing housing solution and privatizing home ownership in urban areas. This paper reveals the mechanism and characteristics of the Chinese housing industry. Problems encountered in the reform process have been investigated to identify the major barrier that blocks the further progress of the reform. Suggestions have been made to cast more effective and efficient policies for establishing a favorable environment to promote the progress of the housing reform.
