Abstract

The “House of Dreams” is a revitalized cave settlement in Zhoushan village in Henan Province China, functioning as a Rural Training Centre. The collaborative project completed November 2020, involved design and reconstruction of 19 caves, 4 large courtyards, 3 amenities blocks, a community kitchen and dining hall, meeting rooms and integrated landscaping, built using over 40% construction waste materials.

The original village had a number of a cave settlements, now abandoned. Inhabitants now live in conventional village houses located on the flatter farmlands above the caves. Consequently, the architectural patrimony of the area has diminished, with the loss of cultural patterns and land use of the original rural settlement. The project name “House of Dreams” comes from collective memories of their former lives and ancestors who once lived in the caves. The revitalization of the caves enables these dreams to become a physical reality once again. The primary motivation for the project was to sustainably restore the caves and the village capacity for self determination.
