Abstract

The fabrication of hollow and solid Ni microspheres using spark erosion method was discussed. Magnetostriction measurements showed a saturation magnetostriction of -24 ppm and -28 ppm for the hollow and solid nickel composites. Nickel/polymer composites incorporating the hollow and solid nickel microspheres were manufactured with volume fractions of 25% and 36% respectively. It was concluded that a significantly large magnetostriction could be obtained in hollow nickel composites, similar to the values obtained in solid nickel composites.
