Abstract

Objective: To investigate the bio-safety and histocompatibility of PTMEG-MDI, a new shape-memory polymer, in order to provide the theoretical background for biomedical application. Methods: PTMEG-MDI was implanted subcutaneously in rats' hind limb as treatment, while nothing was implanted but surgery only served as control. Blood routine, liver and kidney function, and histological examination were tested in three days, one week, two weeks and four weeks after surgery. Results: There is no significant difference in blood routine, liver and kidney function between the treatment group and control group. Histological analysis indicates that the inflammatory response of the implanted PTMEG-MDI fits the general rule of the inflammation. Conclusion: New shape memory polymer PTMEG-MDI has a satisfactory bio-safety and histocompatibility and can be used as a new biomedical material.
