Abstract

In this paper optical networks based on the combination of SCM and WDM and optical direct detection techniques will be discussed. Based on this discussion a new optical network is proposed. The network is a improved version of the original multihop WDM optical shufflenet proposed in [5]. However instead of using multiple lasers operating at different optical wavelength, a laser operating at a single wavelength plus a tunable microwave subcarrier transmitter is employed. The will enable the network to achieve the same functionality as the original network, but with much less component counts. A scheme for sharing lasers among a group of nodes is proposed to show that the component counts can be reduced further, the characteristics of other Components which enable the realization of such a network will be evaluated and the capacity of the network is estimated.
