Abstract

With the boom of power electronic devices in electric railway, harmonics in power systems become increasingly of concern. This paper presents a case study on harmonics in a traction power supply system. The system model is developed by including the frequency-variant impedance. A method for estimating diversity factor of harmonic currents is proposed. A parallel resonance in the system is noted, which results from the cable capacitance and transformer inductance. With the diversity factor obtained from the measurement, harmonic voltages at a PCC are evaluated against the limits given in IEEE Standard 519-1992.
