Abstract

We examine changes in newcomers’ emotional labor process during their first year to answer the research question of how and why newcomers experience changes in emotional labor. Results from a 12-wave longitudinal study with a sample of 322 new nurses revealed that newcomers’ empathic concern, perceptions of the requirement to display positive emotions, deep acting, and expression of naturally felt emotions decreased over time, but surface acting increased over time. Emotional training could effectively slow down the decrease in empathic concern, perception of the requirement to display positive emotions, deep acting, and expression of naturally felt emotions.
