Abstract

The United Nations Environment Program has estimated that the building and construction sector accounts for 37% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and 34% of energy demand in 2022 (UNEP, 2024). The commitment by countries to transition to net-zero emissions by the middle of this century is crucial to meet the international climate targets as outlined in the Paris Agreement. As of mid-2024, 107 countries have adopted net-zero GHG emissions pledges. To achieve the net-zero targets, policies for sustainable real estate and urban redevelopment will be critical. Greening the building sector in Asian cities is therefore an important and timely topic. Efforts to reduce carbon emissions through improvements in energy efficiency and electrification can help mitigate climate change and lower energy costs….
