Abstract
A composite system containing Gd5Si2Ge2, was prepared for magnetostrictive actuator applications. The volume strain due to the thermally induced phase transformation was measured using three orthogonal strain gauges and was compared to thermally induced strain measured in polycrystalline bulk Gd5Si2Ge2. The thermally induced strain in the composite was also compared to magnetically induced strain measured using two orthogonal strain gauges. The results show that the volume strain in the composite is smaller than in the bulk phase.
