Abstract

The proliferation of the use of switching mode power supply and electronic ballasts for energy conservation introduced the problem of power quality. Traditionally, PID controllers were used for the control of power factor correction (PFC) converters to reduce the current harmonics and improve the factor. However, for non-linear process, their performances are not very satisfactory. Since the process is highly non-linear, in this paper a gain adjusted fuzzy logic controller is proposed to improve the performance. As the voltage input to the converter is fluctuating, a fuzzy logic controller with gain adjustment is proposed for the control of the supply current. Experimental studies are included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed fuzzy logic controller in achieving high power factor and low total harmonics distortion (THD).
