Abstract

Functionalized butadiene rubbers have gained significant attention in recent years due to their enhanced properties and expanded application possibilities. This chapter offers a thorough discussion of the various functionalized butadiene rubbers and their processing requirements. To enhance performance characteristics or add new features, butadiene rubbers can be functionalized by adding particular chemical groups or functionalities. Acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR), hydrogenated nitrile-butadiene rubber (HNBR), chlorinated butyl rubber (CIIR), epoxidized butadiene rubber (EBR), and carboxylated butadiene rubber (XNBR) are a few examples of functionalized butadiene rubbers. They are ideal for a variety of applications since each type of functionalized rubber has distinct qualities and advantages. While NBR offers superior heat resistance and chemical resistance, HNBR offers improved mechanical qualities. EBR has better heat resistance, chemical resistance, and electrical insulation whereas CIIR has greater adhesive qualities. Outstanding wear and abrasion resistance are features of XNBR. Each variety of functionalized rubber is discussed in detail, along with the synthesis procedures and processing requirements necessary for producing multifunctional rubbers. The chapter also covers the industrial, electrical, automotive, and construction industries as well as other functionalized butadiene rubber applications. There are also discussions of the possible advantages of using functionalized rubbers, including enhanced performance, higher durability, and more design options. Overall, functionalized butadiene rubbers offer a flexible framework for modifying rubber characteristics to match particular application needs, giving improved performance and advancing many sectors.
