Abstract
Clear and accurate written communication is critical to aviation safety, particularly since approximately 80% of maintenance technicians worldwide are non-native English speakers who must write detailed maintenance records and reports in English. This study addresses this challenge through a mixed-methods approach combining corpus linguistics analysis and pedagogical intervention. To identify representative language patterns in aviation maintenance documentation, the research analyzed six commercial aircraft maintenance manuals used globally. The resulting corpus of 27 million words was analyzed using Biber's (1988) multi-dimensional approach, which examines co-occurring linguistic features to identify underlying functional dimensions in texts. Through this systematic linguistic analysis, the study identified four key control mechanisms in aviation maintenance English: 1) elaborated discourse structures, 2) lexical precision, 3) syntactic simplification, and 4) referential clarity. These mechanisms collectively balance information density with technical clarity in aviation maintenance documentation. These linguistic findings informed the development of specialized technical writing materials through iterative design and expert validation.
The effectiveness of these materials was evaluated in a three-day training program with 10 newly hired maintenance technicians at an Asian maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility. Analysis of pre- and post-training writing samples, using the identified linguistic features as assessment criteria, showed significant improvements in technical writing skills compared to conventional English language training.
This research bridges the gap between linguistic analysis and practical pedagogy by developing technical writing guidelines and training materials that reflect authentic linguistic features of aviation maintenance English.
