Abstract

The higher education sector has witnessed a profound change after the whirlwind launch of ChatGPT in November 2022. Words ranging from ‘disrupt’, ‘transform’ to ‘revolutionize’ have been used to describe the impact of tools powered by Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) such as ChatGPT. After careful considerations on the benefits and risks brought by the GenAI technologies, most higher education institutions have decided to embrace these new and evolving technologies. This has led to robust scholarship on the opportunities and challenges presented by GenAI tools for higher education. Many studies have focused on student perceptions of GenAI use and found university students, especially those learning English as a foreign language (EFL), perceive GenAI tools as a powerful affordance. This affordance is evidenced by the editing and translation functions of GenAI tools which create a level playing field for EFL students by allowing them to produce high-quality term papers. Meanwhile, the studies have also found that higher education institutions need to adopt mitigation strategies to prevent plagiarism and uphold academic integrity. These studies, however, are mainly based on undergraduates. Little research has fully explored the views of postgraduates who need to manage more complex writing tasks, such as writing journal articles, grant proposals and theses. To bridge this gap, this study aims to investigate the GenAI use by PhD students.
