Abstract

The fluid dynamics between the blades of a closed-impeller type centrifugal blood pump were studied via laser sheet flow visualization method. An acrylic prototype blood pump (1:1 scale) with a radial blade impeller of seven vanes was tested. Water was used as the working fluid and was seeded with tiny polystyrene particles of nominal diameter 50 ?m. Preliminary studies showed satisfactory images of the relative flow patterns between two blades.
