Abstract
This paper presents a macro element with slotted bolted nonlinear frictional joints at the ends that have flexibility in the tangential directions. A virtual connection spring element is inserted at the intersection point between a beam and a column to model the behavior of a frictional joint. Numerical simulations with a portal frame showed that the inclusion of nonlinear behavior of the connections could significantly improve the dynamic performance of the simple structures through good damping and energy absorption characteristics.
