Abstract

This paper introduces an approach of applying prestress/compressive stress to fatigue sensitive details of steel members using shape memory alloys (SMA) and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. The effectiveness of this approach in improving the fatigue behavior of steel members is also demonstrated. A total of 27 single edge-notched steel specimens were repaired using one of four different reinforcement configurations. The repaired specimens were tested under tension-tension fatigue loading at three different stress ranges up to failure. Test results showed that the average fatigue life of specimens that were reinforced with SMA/CFRP patches was 26 times that of the un-reinforced specimens at a stress range of 155 MPa. At an applied stress range of 217 MPa the average fatigue life of the retrofitted specimens was 15 times that of the un-reinforced specimens. The results indicate that the use of SMA/CFRP composites is a promising approach to extend the lives of metallic structures that are susceptible to fatigue-induced cracking.
