Abstract

Application of expert systems is currently a fashionable topic in cartography. From the mid 1980s, researchers in cartography have attempted to realize the automation of map design and production using expert systems. Three main research topics in this area can be identified as follows: map content design and symbolization, generalization and name placement. In this article, the first of these topics will be examined in relative detail. Current problems are discussed and some relevant research issues will be proposed.
