N2 - A series of experimental tests on plastic hinges under axial force has been performed, where the inclination angles (β) of the yield line relative to a line perpendicular to the direction of the axial force are chosen as 0°, 15°, 30°, 45° and 60°. The formulae derived by Zhao and Hancock, which include the effect of both shear force and twisting moment on the moment capacity of an inclined yield line under axial force, are verified experimentally. Simplified expressions for the Zhao and Hancock formulae are also given to permit easy application of the theory.
