Abstract

A set of experiments were conducted to determine the heat transfer characteristics of a round, premixed butane/air flame jet impinging on a cold flat plate, normally and tiltedly. The effects of the jet exit Reynolds number, the nozzle-to-plate distance, and the incidence between the plate and the axis of the flame jet, on the thermal performance of the jet, were examined. The range of Reynolds numbers was selected to cover the fully laminar to the transitional flow conditions. The dimensionless nozzle-to-plate distance varied from 1 to 8, covering small and moderate distances. The inclination angles chosen were 57°, 67°, 80° and 90°, respectively. All the tests were carried out at the stoichiometric condition. Under normal impingement, a cool central core with low heat fluxes was found for all the tests. The highest Nusselt number was obtained at nozzle-to-plate distance of 6d. When the impingement plate was tilted, it was found that the location of the maximum heat flux point shifted away from the geometrical impingement point by reducing the angle of incidence. Decreasing the incidence angle also increased the maximum heat flux, while reducing the average heat transfer. The present work studied the butane/air flame jets, which was different from the previous studies concentrated on methane or natural gas flames.
