Abstract

This paper describes an experimental study of the transient aeroacoustic interaction of drone-scale coaxial contra-rotating rotors in an anechoic chamber. A high-precision synchrophasing control system is employed to enable phase-locked measurements of the aeroacoustic interaction process. By combining wavelet transform and microphone array measurements, the spatial-time-frequency characteristics of the far-field noise are obtained. The results indicate that the overlapping of the rotor blades produces prominent low-frequency noise attributed to potential field interaction and the noise level decays rapidly with the increase of rotor spacing. After a phase delay from the blade overlapping, a high-frequency broadband noise with a relatively lower level emerges. This high-frequency noise is inferred to be caused by blade-tip vortex interaction because the phase delay increases with the rotor spacing, which is validated by phase-locked flow field measurements using particle image velocimetry and noise source localization using wavelet-based beamforming. The results reveal the transient aeroacoustic interaction process and provide insights into the development of low-noise coaxial contra-rotating rotor systems.
