Abstract
HID lamps are known for their unique ability to produce almost white light and high lumen/watt ratio as compared to halogen lamps. The high efficacy of the HID lamp coupled with power electronic circuits has made the application of the HID lamp in automobiles possible. A new circuit in which the voltage doubler is fed by the inverter side is presented and compared with the usual method of igniting the lamp. A brief review of various power conditioning circuits for the HID ballast is also presented. The aim of this preliminary report is to gain a first hand experience in designing the HID ballast using the commercially available control chip UCC 2305 with a view to developing a cost effective control circuits. The experimental results obtained from the prototypes are also presented.
