Abstract

This study investigated bone mineral status in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured on 29 AIS patients and 36 age and gender matched normal controls. BMD of lumbar spine and proximal femur were measured using dua-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), BMD of distal radius and distal tibia were measured using peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT). BMD measured either by DEXA or by pQCT were significantly lower in AIS group than normal control group. The results suggested a generalized lower BMD status in the patients with AIS.
