Abstract

Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) application is gaining rapid increase in Hong Kong. However, problems exist in selection of façde orientation and tilt angle, and in balance of aesthetic and energy performance, and other technical considerations. In this paper, a simulation model for estimating the energy performance of BIPV systems is presented. The model is to simulate the power output of a BIPV system for any orientation and tilt angle using limited data. A case study is reported to show the experimental results of the PolyU BIPV experimental system. By making use of the model, the impact on power output due to orientation and inclination of different BIPV facades can be clearly illustrated for architects and engineers to design and monitor BIPV projects with better energy performance.
