Abstract

Conversely, in situ remediation of contaminated groundwater by permeable reactive barriers also has been demonstrated to be technically feasible (Erto et al. 2011; Natale et al. 2008; Thiruvenkatachari et al. 2008). With a high surface area and abundant oxygen-containing functional groups, biochar is potentially applicable as the reactive medium for groundwater remediation (Ahmad et al. 2014a; Cao et al. 2009; Chen and Chen 2009; Kumar et al. 2011). Thus, this chapter reviews the latest development of biochar modifications and its emerging applications for stormwater harvesting and groundwater remediation.
