Abstract
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has been offering credit-bearing foundational Cantonese courses to non-local students since 2011. Over the past ten years, approximately 1000 students from around 20 countries/regions had enrolled these courses. In this talk, I will use Elementary Cantonese as an example to show how we design the curriculum, teaching strategies and assessment methods that cater for second language learners.
Our Cantonese courses have switched from face-to-face to online teaching mode since the outbreak of the pandemic. I will share with the audience about how we adapted to this change by revising our pedagogical and assessment methods while maintaining the course objectives. I hope our practice could give some insights for conducting language courses online.
