Abstract

During the last decade, the need to develop electric vehicles has been widely recognised. In a place such as Hong Kong, where the area of the territory is very small and the population density is very high, the use of electric vehicles is an attractive and realistic proposition. This paper presents the importance of electric vehicles in respect to traffic, environment and energy aspects. The recent developments in electric vehicles in several advanced countries are reviewed. The state of the art of electric vehicles is described with the main emphasis on drive/control systems and batteries. A research project on an electric car carried out at the University of Hong Kong is also described.
