Abstract

In this study, laser engraving was applied on cotton fabric in order to evaluate the effect on surface properties of cotton fabric in term of change of fabric shade. Denim fabric was used as a kind of cotton fabric in this study. Two laser process parameters, i.e. pixel time and resolution, were studied. The laser power density increased in response to the increase in the level of pixel time and resolution. After laser engraving, an improvement in crocking fastness grading of the denim fabrics was noted because the laser engraving process could effectively remove the surface colour and unfixed dye from the fabric surface. Under the effect of high laser power density, a paler surface appearance was noted in the denim fabrics and the K/Ssumvalues indicated that the amount of dye on denim fabric was decreased.
