Abstract

The action of Ca2+ or Mg2+ on silk dyeing with reactive dye was influenced by the electrokinetic properties of silk. Under acidic conditions, the positive potential of silk was lower and there was a drop in dye adsorption. Under alkaline conditions, the negative zeta potential of silk results in a strong barrier for dye anions. Ca2+ or Mg2+ would decrease the zeta potential of silk fiber with a resultant increase of dye. At isoelectric point, the cations had a little effect on the zeta potential, near zero of silk fiber. The influence of dye adsorption was also found to be minimal.
