Abstract

Characteristic of both government-led and market-driven industries, China tourism has, since the turn of the century, experienced enormous growth at the nexus of central planning and market demands. This essay attempts to review the contexts and dynamics for a strategic shift of focus of China tourism, and to discuss the implications of the change for research and practice in its destination development, marketing and management.
