Abstract

The dynamic characteristics of crack propagation in double-cantilever-beam (DCB) specimens under constant load and constant bending moment, as well as in center-cracked panels (CCP) under constant stress are described. This work is concerned with the effect of the crack speed-dependent fracture toughness of the material on the motion of the spreading crack. The theoretical results presented for the crack speed and acceleration of the DCB specimens and the crack velocity of the CCP testpieces show that the rate sensitivity of the material is a significant parameter which must be duly considered in any dynamic analysis.
