Abstract

Whether flashover is accommodated in standard fire curves for a compartmental fire can be evaluated by using two inspection criteria derived from chaotic theory. Phase space diagrams including the fire temperature and its time rate of change were observed. Three standard fire curves were investigated including the BS476 fire curve, the fire curve including the opening factor, and the fire curve commonly used in North America. It is found that none of the three curves include flashover as commonly defined. They can only describe "flashover" at the early stage or give temperature-time relationship at the post-flashover stage.
