Abstract

The talk describes a subject Discourse and Management I taught in the Summer Term 2015. One of the objectives of the subject is for students to understand how power, status and identity are construed through language in a range of professional genres to perform, broadly speaking, transactional and relational functions. I will introduce the main topics, concepts, approaches, models, and methods taught and discussed in the subject and describe some classroom activities. These classroom activities involve students reading ESP research in, and working with ESP materials from, a range of real-life professional contexts.
