Abstract

One thorny issue facing teachers in the higher education sector is how to motivate students to learn. Under the pandemic, reliance on online teaching and learning has intensified the problem. In this paper, we report on a project in which we developed virtual teaching and learning materials in the form of animated videos and case-based videos in a leadership subject for university students. Based on the positive youth development (PYD) approach, experienced teachers developed 24 videos surrounding different PYD constructs. These PYD constructs included self-understanding and self-management, cognitive competence, social-emotional competence, resilience, moral competence, spirituality, law-abiding leadership, cultural competence, effective communication and team building. To understand the effectiveness of the developed videos, we piloted them in Semester 2 of the 2021/22 academic year via online teaching. Initial positive feedback from the students and teachers were observed.
