Abstract
Nowadays, healthcare and hygiene products are becoming more and more important in the field of technical textiles because of the specificity of their end uses. In this study, we have developed a pair of hygienic socks loaded with antifungal microcapsules especially for the treatment of athlete's foot (tinea pedis). First, antifungal clotrimazole/chitosan microcapsules are prepared via an oil-in-water emulsion technique and socks with moisture control are studied and selected. Then, medical hygienic socks with drug loaded microcapsules are developed by spraying the clotrimazole/chitosan microcapsules onto the socks. The socks have been studied in a preliminary clinical study. The complete cure rate of tinea pedis is significantly better in the active group in comparison with the control group (84.62% vs. 42.85%, p = 0.011) at the end of a 4-week period.
